Jones County Heritage Festival - September 17th, 2011
Jones County is a rural county with a population of 10,018 located in southeastern North Carolina. It is a thoroughfare for beach traffic during the summer however its roots lie firmly in agriculture. Jones County is still largely dependent on tobacco as well as small grains such as soybeans, corn, cotton and wheat. There is also a large amount of land in forestry in addition to having portions of Hofmann Forest and the Croatan Forest. The residents of Jones County still enjoy a simple lifestyle where you can call the local restaurant and they already know who you are by the sound of your voice and what you normally order. There are several landmarks in the county, the most famous of which is the Brock Mill Pond. For many years, Jones County dreamed of having a signature festival which celebrates this rich agriculture heritage. In 2009, these dreams came true in the form of the "Jones County Heritage Festival".
The first year, the committee decided to have the festival in July to ensure that there would be tobacco available. The second year, the committee decided that it would be best to have the festival later in the summer/fall and after school was back in session. Thus, the third Saturday in September was chosen.
The festival is held at the Jones County Civic Center on Highway 58 outside of Trenton headed toward Pollocksville. In 2010, festival highlights included looping tobacco, making butter, quilting, milking a cow, learning how to show a goat, equestrian skills, a vintage car and tractor show, homemade ice cream, a host of quality homemade crafts, a county fair exhibit, a heritage parade, tours of the historic Brock Mill House, canoe/kayak rides on the mill pond, entertainment, food and fun.
One of the biggest draws of the festival is the "Heritage Interviews". Some of our most seasoned Jones County residents are interviewed about how life used to be in the county. The Jones County Arts Council is working with a production company and high school students at Jones Senior High School to use these interviews to create a theatrical production about life in Jones County. This production will be incorporated in the festivities when it is complete.
What is on tap for 2011? The festival committee is working on several special events for this year. One of the top draws will be Bobby Goodson from Onslow County. Mr. Goodson is the star of the TV series "Swamp Loggers" which airs on the Discovery Channel. Visit this blog often and check out what else will be featured at this year's festival.
